
New Delhi: Dr Anjani Kumar is now the Director (Technical - Projects & Planning) of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL). He joined his new role on 28th September 2026 and comes with over 30 years of experience in the coal industry.
Prior to joining WCL, Dr Kumar had been serving as an Executive Director (Contracts) in the head office of Coal India Limited located in Kolkata, where he worked from October 2025 onwards.
Dr Kumar began his career with Coal India as early as April 1993 and has held important positions within the organization till date. He held various positions with Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) which included that of Technical Secretary to the CMD. He also held the post of Head of Projects & Planning Department with Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL).
Over the years, Dr Kumar has built expertise in mining operations, project planning, contract management, vigilance and corporate management. At WCL, he will lead the company’s technical functions related to projects and planning.
He holds a Bachelor of Technology Degree in Mining Engineering and Phd in Environmental Science from IIT (ISM), Dhanbad. He also holds a certificate for First Class Mines Manager's Certificate of Competency from the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS). He holds an MBA in Human Resources and an Executive Diploma in Project Management.
On joining the organization, he was welcomed by WCL CMD Dr Hemant Sharad Pande, Director (Finance) Bikram Ghosh and Director (Technical) Sandeep Paranjape. His deep experience in mining and project management is expected to support WCL as it works to improve project execution and drive sustainable growth.
